Winemaking Notes:
The 2017 Zweigelt is right in line with previous vintages. Thanks to the 100% whole cluster fermentation, there are strong carbonic notes, making the wine similar to a cru Beaujolais, yet with it’s own distinct Zweigelty character. The nose is bizarre, but in a good way, with unusual aromas of rhubarb, cherry, leather, pink peppercorn, and a note best described as beach sand wet with salt water. The palate is juicy and vibrant, with Bing cherry, cranberry, and balsamic vinegar flavors, with a floral, almost spinach note. Firm, dusty tannins carry the finish, with floral and savory notes dominating. As usual, I think this is the most interesting wine of the vintage.
