Winemaking Notes:
The 2016 pinot is hard to explain. The first year of making 16-month barrel aged pinot with no sulfur was met with incredulous looks from a lot of people in the co-op winery. There was a lot of self-doubt in the process. In the end, the result is—I think—by far the best pinot we’ve made for HD. Sure it’s cloudy. But the nose is wild: cinnamon, green peppercorn, pomegranate, raspberry, graphite, iron, and cedar, and then a palate that is so bright and vibrant, exactly the goal of a zero sulfur wine. Cherry, mushroom, anise, it’s all there, but the defining factor is definitely the freshness. This wine is ALIVE in a way that I don’t see in most traditionally made Pinots.
